‘Tell Your Story’: a randomized controlled trial of an online intervention to reduce mental health stigma and increase help-seeking in refugee men with posttraumatic stress

Refugees report elevated rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but are relatively unlikely to seek help for their symptoms. Mental health stigma is a key barrier to help-seeking amongst refugees. We evaluated the efficacy of an online intervention in reducing self-stigma and increasing help-seeking in refugee men.

CALD Lived Experience Research Final Report - National Suicide Prevention Taskforce

CIRCA was engaged by the National Suicide Prevention Taskforce, within the Commonwealth Department of Health, and commissioned through the Suicide Prevention Research Fund, managed by Suicide Prevention Australia, to undertake research that will help to build a better understanding about the lived experience of suicide in Australia to inform recommendations to the government. The focus of the research was on people who have attempted suicide or experienced a suicidal crisis and who are from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. Gender, Mental Health Stigma, and Help-Seeking in Arabic- and Swahili-Speaking Communities in Australia

Over the past decade, people from Iraq, Syria, and Sub-Saharan Africa have been among the largest refugee groups in Australia. Despite facing higher mental health risks, many people in multicultural communities hesitate to seek help due to stigma. This research, led by Western Sydney University, was funded by Mental Health Australia as part of the Embrace Multicultural Mental Health Project. The study aimed to explore mental health stigma and help-seeking behaviors, with a focus on gender perspectives, among Arabic- and Swahili-speaking individuals in Sydney.

This study addressed the limited understanding of suicide risk and patterns among migrants in Australia. Supporting international students’ wellbeing in Victoria: Mental health, wellbeing and suicide prevention resources

International students face unique stressors, including a greater risk of depression, financial and housing stress, academic pressures, and navigating cultural and language differences far from home. These stressors, combined with barriers to seeking help, can increase their risk of suicide. Addressing these challenges requires, a multi-faceted, student-empowered approach across systems, services, and agencies. Since 2022, the International Students’ Wellbeing Taskforce, led by The Victorian Suicide Prevention and Response Office at the Victorian Department of Health, has worked to support international students’ wellbeing in Victoria. The taskforce has now concluded and has produced many valuable wellbeing and suicide prevention resources.
